Why Composites?

Composite tanks, vessels, and piping systems, both fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) and dual laminate (FRP with a thermoplastic liner) can offer many advantages over other pipe and vessel materials including rubber lined carbon steel (RLCS), stainless steel (SS), alloys, and thermoplastics.

FRP and dual laminates are suitable for a wide range of process streams including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, chlorine gas (wet and dry), chlorine dioxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, solvent extraction solutions, brines, slurries, and more. In addition to the interior corrosion barrier, the exterior FRP shell is also corrosion-resistant, making it the material of choice in corrosive atmospheric conditions.

Weight is another consideration. In addition to excellent chemical resistance, FRP is ¼  the weight of steel, easing concerns around site location, lifting, installation, and support. Two workers can carry a length of FRP pipe that would require a crane if it were made of steel.

But what really sets composite equipment apart from other materials is its lower life cycle costs. Since FRP is naturally corrosion-resistant, it requires very little maintenance compared to RLCS, SS, and alloys which require regular, scheduled cleaning and coating to maintain corrosion resistance.
